Rejetés et raillés par tous les élèves d'un collège, un garçon borgne (Matt) et une fille en surpoids (Jill) finissent par se lier d'amitié pour tout de suite laisser place à une histoire d'amour.
Leur relation est mise à rude épreuve face à la méchanceté des uns et des autres. Quand Jill décide à tout prix de maigrir, Matt s'enferme dans l'épouvantable crainte qu'elle finisse par l'abandonner.... car il constate, impuissant, qu'elle perd du poids et que les garçon ne sont pas insensibles à sa " métamorphose ".
Le meilleur ami de Matt, Elmo, lui aussi " différent ", aura quant à lui fort à faire car il devra gérer seul un cauchemare irrépressible.
